Residential Girls High School Team Camp - August 4-8, 2012

The first week of Soccer Dynamics residential camp program is designed for high school players who are trying to prepare in early August for their upcoming high school season. This camp takes place at Colby-Sawyer College in bucolic New London, New Hampshire. Colby-Sawyer is a small, New England Liberal Arts based college. Soccer Dynamics is currently the only residential youth program which the college permits on campus. Players live in dormitory rooms of 2-4 residents per room, with all players from each respective high school team housed on the same floor or the same wing of a given dormitory. Each player receives a match uniform consisting of shirt, shorts and socks, their own high quality soccer ball for training and to keep after camp, three meals a day at the college dining hall, as well as an optional evening snack bar for players who are still hungry after a long day on the pitch.

The camp has a full complement of trainers, access to the college's training room facilities, a variety of athletic fields, gymnasium usage, auditorium usage and other campus facilities.

This camp is generally comprised of 10-12 high school teams, with programs ranging from as small as 11 players to as large as 35 players. (The recommended minimum number of players per program is actually 18 players in order to remain as one team. Teams with less than 18 players are sometimes combined so that there will be sufficient players to compete during the week.) Over the last twenty years Soccer Dynamics has had the pleasure of training girls high school teams from the following communities: Acton; Ashland; Arlington; Boxboro; Brookline; Canton; Carlisle; Concord; Dover; Franklin; Holliston; Hopkinton; Kearsage NH; Medfield; Natick; North Attleboro; Needham; Newton; Sherborn; Walpole; Wellesley; Westford and Winchester;

The training program consists of morning technical training sessions in which the emphasis is on cultivating a better touch on the ball, a wider range of "take-on" dribbling skills and the improved ability to strike the ball with accuracy and power. Each player tracks her own development in ball control and ball striking so she can document her improvement. Each player ends the morning session competing in a small-sided match, with an emphasis on trying to integrate new skills and techniques, without concern of failure or mistakes.

The camp's afternoon sessions are comprised of team tactics. In these sessions, each high school program works on selected aspects of team play in an effort to assist the team in maximizing its potential as a collective unit prior to their high school preseason.

The early evening session is devoted to match play. Each high school program competes against another high school program in a daily, full-sided match.

The off-field night sessions are oriented toward team building, involving fun activities which require each high school program to engage and integrate its full membership.

We have found that this camp helps bring high school players and high school programs together in a meaningful preseason environment. The benefits of this camp include individual technical development, team tactical enhancement, team bonding and the broadening and strengthening of friendship groups and collective commitment. Many of the aforementioned communities have been returning to Soccer Dynamics year after year, with some committed soccer players concluding their senior year in high school having been a Soccer Dynamics camper for as many as ten years in a row.

This camp is generally of comprised of 10-15 year old soccer players who are interested in raising the level of their play, but are also excited about the communal camp environment. In the past, players have come as members of various club teams such as NEFC, MPS and the Scorpions, or they have come up as individuals eager to meet new friends who share their passion for soccer.

The training program consists of morning technical training sessions in which the emphasis is on cultivating a better touch on the ball, a wider range "take-on" dribbling skills and greater ability to strike the ball with accuracy and power. Each player tracks their own development in ball control and ball striking so they can see objective criteria noting their improvement. The camp's afternoon sessions are comprised of improving tactical awareness, and competing in soccer related contests These contests are considered part of the camp's "Soctathalon" which includes competitions such as head volleyball, soccer tennis, soccer horseshoes; dribbling contests, soccer golf, micro soccer and other soccer related events. In the morning and afternoon sessions all players are encouraged to take risks in trying to integrate new dribbling techniques, new passing and ball control techniques, as well as working to expand their game.

The early evening session is devoted to match play. Each player will compete in one or more daily, full-sided match.

The off-field night sessions are oriented toward team building predicted on cabin groups, involving fun activities which require each camper to be engaged with and integrate among their cabin mates. Activities include a slide show of the camp, a skit night, a campfire "Smores: night, ghost story night, and other topical events.

We have found that this camp combines the experience of the traditional summer camp with the passion for improving as a soccer player. We encourage club teams to attend which are seeking to pull together in a meaningful, preseason environment. The benefits of this camp include individual technical development, club team bonding and the broadening and strengthening of friendship groups and collective commitment. However, this is camp not a specifically designed team camp and the majority of campers who attend have historically come as individuals or have signed up with a limited number of friends.
